Fairness and Trust in Game Theory

چکیده

In order to apply game theory to interactions among people, one needs to know what game people are playing, and to know what game people are playing, one needs to know their preferences. If the individuals care only about their own material payoff, it may be easy to know their preferences. But other things matter to people, and to apply or test game theory, some account of what those other things are and how they matter may be needed. This essay examines the dependence of utility on material self-interest, altruism, concerns about fairness, and concerns about trust. It begins with Matthew Rabin's proposal for incorporating fairness into game theory (1993), points out inadequacies, and sketches remedies. The complexities that arise in even the simplest two-person interactions are daunting.

Fairness and Trust in Structured Populations

Classical economic theory assumes that people are rational and selfish, but behavioral experiments often point to inconsistent behavior, typically attributed to “other regarding preferences.” The Ultimatum Game, used to study fairness, and the Trust Game, used to study trust and trustworthiness, have been two of the most influential and well-studied examples of inconsistent behavior. Recently, ...

Trust and Reciprocity: Implications of Game Triads and Social Contexts

This paper uses a triadic experimental design to conduct trust and reciprocity experiments. The experiments with game triads discriminate between transfers resulting from trust or reciprocity and transfers resulting from (intentions-unconditional) other-regarding preferences. Alternative treatments vary the environment of the experiments from a weak to a strong social context. The observations ...

Cooperative Benefit and Cost Games under Fairness Concerns

Solution concepts in cooperative games are based on either cost games or benefit games. Although cost games and benefit games are strategically equivalent, that is not the case in general for solution concepts. Motivated by this important observation, a new property called invariance property with respect to benefit/cost allocation is introduced in this paper. Since such a property can be regar...

Challenges for Transparency

Transparency is often deemed critical to enable effective real-world deployment of intelligent systems. Yet the motivations for and benefits of different types of transparency can vary significantly depending on context, and objective measurement criteria are difficult to identify. We provide a brief survey, suggesting challenges and related concerns. We highlight and review settings where tran...

Straining towards trust: some constraints Essay on studying trust in organizations

Trust is of great interest in organizational research and the social sciences. It is argued here that any theory of trust ought to treat a set of observed empirical regularities as constraints. A constraint on a theory is either an assumption made in constructing the theory (e.g., we assume people have a tendency to be fair in their dealings with others) or an explanandum (e.g., we must explain...
